Here, Getting Around Tips
Throughout
this book, we've used route numbers when referring to state roads such as
Mass. Rt. 6A and Mass. Rt. 28, but some of these roads go by other names as
well. Mass. Rt. 6A, for example, is known in Brewster as Main Street; in
Orleans it's called Old King's Highway.
Don't
be fooled when you see a bumper sticker that reads "Cape Cod
Tunnel--Resident's Permit." There is no such tunnel. It's a local joke
first developed in 1994 to cash in on naive tourists. Today, there are three
tunnel permit stickers in circulation that are almost identical and seen on
vehicles everywhere throughout Cape Cod.
The
population in Provincetown balloons from fewer than 4,000 people in winter
to around 60,000 in summer. To avoid the seasonal traffic and parking
problems, take the Cape Cod Rapid Transit Authority shuttle, a minibus which
travels a 20-minute loop encompassing Provincetown, Herring Cove Beach, and
North Truro seven days a weeks from June 24 to September 17 between 7:15 AM
and 12:15 AM. Passengers need only flag down the driver to stop anywhere
along the route. The ride costs $1, regardless of distance. Senior citizens,
children 6 to 17, and people with disabilities pay 50 cents. Children 5 and
under ride free. For more information contact the CCRTA at (508) 385-8326.
