Mid-Cape
Cape Cod Central Railroad
Main St., Hyannis• (508) 771-3800, toll-free (888)
797-RAIL• www.capetrain.com
Climb aboard the Cape Cod Central and feel the
thrill as the whistle blows and you begin your fun-filled adventure from
Hyannis to Sandwich and back. You'll pass cranberry bogs, natural
woodlands, lush marshes, and more as you make your way to the Cape Cod
Canal. The Scenic Trains operate daily from the end of May through
October, except on Mondays and holiday weekends. The ride takes about 50
minutes to get to the canal, with a 10-minute stopover to gather
passengers, and another 50 minutes back to Hyannis. The fare is $13 per
adult; $11 for seniors 62 and over; and $9 for children 3 to 11 years of
age. The train leaves three times a day from the Hyannis station at Main
and Center Streets, and can also be picked up in Sandwich at the Jarves
Street station.
The railroad is also bringing back the Dinner Train, a three-hour
gourmet excursion. Recapture the romance of a by-gone era on the Cape Cod
Central while you enjoy a five-course gourmet meal served on crisp white
linen. The three-hour trip departs at 6:30 PM from the Hyannis Station.
The fare is $49.95 per person and is an adults-only excursion. Proper
dress and reservations are required.
If you're bringing the kids, however, you can still have a dining-train
experience: Cape Cod Central offers a fun and affordable dining experience
for the whole family too. While the kids dine on hot dogs, hamburgers, and
pizza, parents enjoy a menu of their own for a more refined dining
experience. This two-hour dinner trip departs from the Hyannis Station at
6:30 PM each Tuesday evening during the summer months. The cost is $24.95
for adults and $19.95 for children under 12.

Many communities offer public trolley service primarily for
transportation, but lots of people just hop on the public trolleys for a
grand tour of the area. The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA)
operates the following trolleys: Falmouth's Whoosh Trolley; the SeaLine,
which runs between Hyannis and Falmouth; the Hyannis Area Trolley; The
Villager, which runs from Hyannis to Barnstable Village and also to
Barnstable Harbor (where you can catch the whale boats); the Yes trolley
and the Coach of Dennis trolleys, which connect the Southside beaches; and
the H2O, which runs from Hyannis to Orleans. For information on any of the
routes call the CCRTA at (508) 385-8326 or (800) 352-7155. Unless
otherwise noted, the fare is $1, and 50 cents for senior citizens and the
disabled. All-day trolley passes are available for $3, and are half-price
for senior citizens, disabled people, and youth 6 to 17 years old,
children 5 and under are free with a fare paying adult. (See our Getting
Here, Getting Around chapter for more detailed information on Cape Cod's
trolleys.)
