Skateboarders have gained a few alternatives to parking lots and
sidewalks. A number of towns have developed skateboard parks to give
youngsters a safe place to skate, and others are planning to create
skateboard parks shortly. Orleans was the first town to establish a park
in the Lower Cape and now has a permanent location on Eldredge Parkway.
It's called Finch Park, in honor of Jean Finch, whose tireless efforts on
behalf of young skateboarders were inspired by her grandson. Wellfleet
took the lead from Orleans and built a large skateboard park and ramp
course down by the town pier at Wellfleet Harbor. Barnstable, Bourne, and
Falmouth have facilities, and Harwich has a very successful skateboard
park at Brooks Park on Mass. For those parks listed, kids pay a nominal fee and must adhere to a roster of common-sense rules. Helmets are a must! |
