Outlet Center This small collection of outlets has been known to slow us down considerably when we're heading off Cape. There's a great Liz Claiborne outlet plus outlets for other quality names including Levi's, Izod and Barbizon. Look for the sign just before you get onto Route 25 in Buzzards Bay. It's open every day. Cape Cod Factory Outlet Mall This is a nice collection of 21 well-known manufacturers, including Bass, Boston Bed & Bath, London Fog, Adolfo II, Oshkosh B'Gosh, Buck-A-Book, Corning Revere and Carter's. Other well-known outlets here include Champion Haynes, Casual Corner and Petite Sophisticates. The mall also has kiosks for leather goods, clothing and jewelry. Look for Bao, a talented pastel artist who can turn a photo into a portrait. The mall is open daily year-round and is just off Exit 1 as you're heading onto the Cape on Route 6. It's right at the base of the Sagamore Bridge. Christmas Tree Shop Warning: People have been known to lose track of time in this store and to emerge dazed and happy, carrying bags filled with all kinds of things they didn't know they needed. The bargains here are irresistible! Locally owned and operated, the Christmas Tree Shop carries a huge, ever-changing inventory of gifts and housewares, including lamps, lawn furniture, greeting cards, foods and gourmet items, paper goods, linens and, of course, Christmas items, all at near wholesale prices. The inventory is always fresh and interesting, and the staff pleasant and helpful. The Sagamore shop, with its unusual thatched roof, is a regional attraction; other Christmas Tree Shops are located in Falmouth, Hyannis, West Dennis, West Yarmouth, Yarmouthport and Orleans. The shops are open daily. Pairpoint Crystal In keeping with the glassmaking history of the area established in the 1800s by Boston & Sandwich Glass Co., Pairpoint produces and sells beautifully fashioned handblown and pressed glass. Pairpoint makes vases, candlesticks, sun catchers, cup plates and stemware, along with authentic reproductions of early American glass originals found in museums. You can watch glassblowers at work Monday through Friday; the shop is open daily. Angelthreads Folk Art This fascinating shop features the considerable talents of owner Susan Strauss and other crafters who produce painted folk art on wood, tin, slate, fabric and found objects. The shop's signature item is the memory box, a lovely box designed to hold tomorrow's treasures. You'll also find angels, tinware, dried flowers, miniatures and small items to use in a type-tray shadowbox or a dollhouse. The while-you-wait enlargement services, the shop offers printing on T-shirts, mugs, cups and pins. You can also buy cameras and binoculars here. Sandwich
Lantern Works Handmade on the premises, the handsome brass and copper onion lights sold here are replicas of those once carried on whaling vessels. Pre-1800s lanterns, wall sconces and chandeliers to hang indoors or outdoors are also available. The shop is open Monday through Saturday. Titcomb's Bookshop It would be easy to spend hours in this shop. Its three floors have all manner of cozy places to sit and peruse the large selection of new, used and historical books. Titcomb's specializes in rare books, local authors and regional history, and their wide range of children's selections include the popular American Girl series (you'll find everything from books, trading cards and albums, project books, posters and theater kits). Titcomb's sponsors a number of special events for children throughout the year, such as period tea parties. It also carries greeting cards and orders and ships books. It's open daily. Toy Chest and Hobby Shop This cute shop for children carries popular brands such as Lego, Brio and Playmobil along with Lionel trains, books and hobby pieces, stuffed animals, baby toys and lots of arts-and-crafts items for children. The store also sells educational puzzles, books, model planes, boats and cars. It's open Monday through Saturday, with Sunday hours during the Christmas holiday season. Youlden's Cranberry Barn If you love lace, don't miss this shop. It stocks 25 styles of imported and domestic curtain and table lace. Parchment paper roses, which are ideal for interior decorating or for special occasions, are prominent here and are complemented by all kinds of country gifts, pottery, baskets, cranberry scoops, clam baskets and wreaths, many of which are locally made. Youlden's also carries the popular Doris Morgan prints. The Cranberry Barn is open daily April 1 to early January. Bean & Cod This shop is both attractive and appetizing: Intriguing gourmet food baskets are custom-filled with cheese, crackers, teas and coffee or regional products, and they can be shipped wherever you want. The New England Bucket contains pancake mix and syrup from Vermont, baked beans, Lake Champlain chocolate and New England clam chowder. The store also carries cookbooks, food mills and other cooking equipment and gift items. The shop is open daily May through December, and Wednesday through Saturday from January to April. chiffon scarves. It also carries leather items such as backpacks, brief cases and dress purses, along with children's clothing, cards and unusual items such as Native American drums. Europa is open daily all year. Howlingbird Studio A popular silk-screening studio that handprints on canvas bags, long- and short-sleeve T-shirts, sweatshirts and hats, Howlingbird is open daily year-round, with shorter hours in winter. Its retail shop in Woods Hole is open May through Christmas. Items are stocked and ready for printing, some are already printed, or you can bring in your own article. If the screen you select is in use, your order can be printed immediately. Market Bookshop Housed in a historic building right off Main Street, the Market Bookshop is celebrating its 29th successful year in 1999. The shop maintains an excellent selection of local authors, geography, travel, fiction, nonfiction and children's books. Settle into a comfortable chair by the fireplace to peruse hardcover and paperback books and magazines. The store does a lot of special orders and ships anywhere. It's open daily all year. Falmouth Mall This large retail center has 26 stores, including Bradlees, Cherry & Webb, T.J. Maxx and Perfecta Camera. In addition to major clothing and food stores, you can also browse through small gift shops. The mall also has a restaurant, Clyde's. Quaker Bonnet A longtime presence in Falmouth, the Quaker Bonnet has many lovely gift and housewares items, such as glasses, trays, placemats and lamps. If you need a present for a formal or special occasion, you'll find it here, and Quaker Bonnet even offers a wedding gift registry. It's open Monday through Saturday all year. Soft As A Grape This well-established business carries T-shirts, shorts and other casual apparel at two shops on Main Street. One carries mostly floral limited-edition designs in dresses, hats, tees and sweaters; another is a souvenir clothing shop specializing in nautical designs for men. The stores, which carry some jewelry, barrettes and trinkets, are open daily year-round. You'll find other Soft As A Grape shops in Plymouth, Sagamore, Woods Hole, Falmouth, Mashpee Commons, Hyannis, Chatham and Edgartown. Uncle Bill's Country Store This favorite for Falmouth shoppers carries a little bit of everything -- greeting cards, collectibles, homemade jams, penny candy and jewelry. You can also pick up fresh or silk flowers here. Special collections include Byers Choice carolers, Old World Christmas, Lang, Dept. 56 villages and decorations for all holiday seasons, especially Christmas. The store has a huge variety of teddy bears and also stocks a large number of cranberry and cranberry-design products, among them linen, pottery, food, cookbooks and children's toys. The store is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Under The Sun Under The Sun has been in business in Woods Hole for some 25 years and has always emphasized local artists and artisans who make jewelry, glassware, pottery and other functional and artistic pieces. You can take your pick of puzzles, soft toys, educational playthings and some leather items, along with lots of jewelry. The shop is open daily in season and Monday through Saturday in the winter. Woods Hole Handworks A cooperative that represents the works of a number of excellent local artists who work with clay, wood, metal, wool and other materials, the Handworks shop is an opportunity to learn more about Cape art and is well worth a visit. The shop is open daily in the summer, with limited hours other times of the year; it's closed January through April. Dick & Ellie's Flea Market Not to be missed. If you can't find it here, it hasn't been invented yet. Allow time to savor the merchandise on display and to get to know the vendors, some of whom have been at Dick & Ellie's for 15 years. The flea market is open Friday through Sunday and Tuesday in season and on weekends through October. Factory Shoe Mart Looking for great savings on new shoes and sneakers? Step right up to Factory Shoe Mart for incredible outlet prices on such names as Reebok, Rockport, 9 West and Esprit. Factory Shoe Mart also has a branch in Dennisport. It's open daily. Mashpee Commons With nearly 100 businesses, including four banks, six restaurants and several nationally known chains, Mashpee Commons has been praised in national design magazines for its attractive, functional and unique retail shopping area. Some of its best known businesses include The Gap, Blockbuster Video, Puritan Clothing Store, P.A. Company, Hoyts Cinema and BayBank. Talbot's, Banana Republic and Gap Kids were added in 1998, along with a cigar shop and sporting goods store. The acclaimed Gone Tomatoes Restaurant is a good place to treat yourself to a nice lunch between shop-hopping, or you can recharge at Starbuck's Coffee House. For the health-conscious, The Juice Bar serves all kinds of fruit smoothies, juices or even a shot of wheat grass. Mashpee Commons sponsors 35 annual outdoor concerts and activities throughout the year, including hayrides, Christmas caroling, Pops symphony performances and the New England Jazz Festival. Mashpee Formerly called Lovers For Everyone Ltd., this shop has nearly every toy imaginable -- or at least, all the best ones! Legos, Gund stuffed animals, European educational toys, great beach toys and instructions on how to make a sand dragon are a mere sampling of the delights inside this shop. The shop has something for children of all ages, including the wee ones. Homecomings You'll find everything imaginable for the kitchen, from small appliances to gourmet coffees and utensils. Homecomings sells regional food such as New England chowder, corn relish, beach plum jelly and cranberry vinegar in a lobster bottle. The shop also carries cookbooks, jellybeans and contemporary gift items. Hatfield's A delightful shop, Hatfield's features a wide selection of home decorating and collectible items, including colorful pottery, needlework, Byers' Choice carolers and cuddly stuffed animals. This is one of those shops where you must take your time browsing lest you miss something! It's open year-round. Kensington's Here's a store for the young and restless, or just the restless: Nantucket bags, all kinds of luggage, everything for the beach (from portable chairs to coolers), backpacks, current and historical maps, journals and countless other upscale items related to travel -- even a tide clock. Items are priced from very reasonable to expensive. Signature This is an American Craftsman Gallery, a designation that indicates all goods are American-made. The items are distinctive as well, for nearly every piece of jewelry, artwork and stemware at Signature is one of a kind. Fascinating art objects in glass and metal, unique pieces of jewelry in gold and semiprecious stones and even garden sculpture are displayed here, creating a gallery atmosphere in a unique shop.
