Cape Cod Healthcare

Cape Cod Healthcare comprises the following services:

Primary-care physicians: With more than 150 primary care physicians practicing in 100 community-based offices throughout the area, Cape Cod Healthcare has made it easier for Cape Cod residents to get the health care they need, when they need it.

Emergency Care: Two hospital-based emergency departments operate around the clock and treat more than 90,000 emergencies each year. These departments are complemented by urgent-care facilities within each hospital and at locations in Harwich and Sandwich.

Outpatient Services: Diagnostic testing facilities and services include mammography services, MRI, CAT scans, and 12 community-based outpatient lab sites around the Cape.

Hospital Care: Two acute-care hospitals--Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital--offer 332 inpatient beds and admit more than 20,000 people per year.

Surgical Care: Specialized surgeons conduct more than 12,000 surgeries annually.

Specialty Care: A total of 13 hospital and community-based facilities offer treatment for cancer, arthritis, rheumatic disease, wound care, behavioral health services, physical therapy, speech and occupational therapy, and infectious disease consulting, among other specialized services.

Home Care and Support Services: The Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod specializes in community and home healthcare. They provide a comprehensive range of serviced to patients in their own homes. Along with specialized nursing care, they offer personal care, dressing, feeding, shopping, homemaker services that include light cleaning and cooking, and companionship. VNA also supervises volunteers from hospice care.

Falmouth Hospital

Falmouth Hospital, located 45 minutes west of Hyannis, serves the Upper Cape towns of Falmouth, Sandwich, Bourne, and Mashpee. The 84-bed facility offers an excellent full-time emergency room and intensive-care unit, maternity and pediatric units, occupational and physical therapy, older adult healthcare services, and a full range of diagnostic testing, including MRI, CAT scan, ultrasound, mammography, and nuclear medicine. The hospital is at the center of a large medical complex that includes the JML Care Center, a 56-bed assisted-living facility known as Heritage at Falmouth, and private medical offices. The hospital includes a new wing, the Faxon Center, featuring outpatient surgery center, a maternity center,
diagnostic imaging, and a Women's Health Resource Center, which offers educational
services and a library.

Falmouth Hospital has 180 affiliated physicians (50 primary-care physicians and 130
specialist physicians) and operates four medical offices in the area: the John Lewis Medical Center on Mass. Rt. 130 in Sandwich, (508) 888-2882; Mashpee Medical Associates, 19 Steeple Road, Mashpee, (508) 477-4400; Bourne Medical Associates, 120 Clay Pond Road, Bourne, (508) 759-7117; and Women's Health Group of Upper Cape Cod, 200 Jones Road, Falmouth, (508) 548-4865.

Affiliated with the hospital, The Visiting Nurse Association of Upper Cape Cod offers Care on Call, (508) 548-5577, a private-duty nursing service; two adult day healthcare centers in Sandwich; and maternal and child home healthcare. Mid-Cape

Cape Cod Hospital, located in Hyannis, serves 11 towns of the Mid-, Lower, and Outer Cape. A large medical complex of more than 12 buildings, the hospital offers 24-hour medical care with on-call specialty consultation. The hospital has 249 beds and nearly 250 affiliated physicians. It is the largest surgical center on the Cape and Islands and the only one with an inpatient/outpatient psychiatric center. It is a regional center for cancer and radiation treatment and features a new emergency wing, a new maternity unit, and a new lab that offers cardiac catheterization--a service that patients previously had to travel to Boston to obtain.

The family care assisted-living program allows senior citizens and HIV patients to stay at home during treatment. The hospital also has short- and long-term rehabilitative care, and two off-site nursing homes, The Manor and The Pavilion, for extended care.

The Spaulding Cape Cod Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Sports Medicine Complex is an outpatient facility for physical and occupational rehabilitation. An extensive new radiation department provides MRI testing. The hospital has numerous support groups for bereavement, cancer, maternity bereavement, smoking cessation, and domestic violence. Its Young At Heart senior fitness program and weight reduction programs have been very successful.
